STRANGE CHARM UP DOWN TOP BOTTOM at the Latitude Invitational, Edmonton, Alberta

ABOUT

Strange Charm Up Down Top Bottom, digital print on PVC banner, installed as part of the Latitude Invitational group exhibition at Latitude 53 in Edmonton, AB in 2017. S.C.U.D.T.B. plays with the viewers senses by making it difficult for the viewer to focus on the heavily abstracted forms which are heavily blurred. The eye can never quite settle on the image and keeping it in a continuous state of focusing which can make the image appear to breathe and move. An intentional by-product of this abstraction is the triggering of apophenia and pareidolia in the viewer, making them look for meaning in the randomness. The image itself is a photograph of a macro-video of television static, with an old cable box feeding a cartoon. The cartoon image came out staticky because the coaxial cable was intentionally left dangling just outside of the jack. The name is a reference to Quarks, a type of sub-atomic particle that are smaller than, and make up, Protons and Neutrons, coming in six “flavours”: Strange, Charm, Up, Down, Top, Bottom.
